Bua adopted a vernacular approach to extending a cultural centre and guesthouse in western Iceland. A former farm, its original stone-turf and concrete walls were lovingly restored in celebration of their storied textures. A double height entrance on the main building doubles as an exhibition space. An additional floor is held aloft by driftwood from the nearby beach. The adjoining sheep shed now homes ensuite bedrooms. And exposed foundations support a greenhouse and kitchen garden. This series of interventions makes imaginative use of salvaged objects and locally handmade tiles.
